The cultural opposition between grunge and pop music in the 1990s was one of the decade's defining generational fault lines, generating a debate about authenticity, commercialism, and musical value that played out in critical discourse, radio playlists, schoolyard arguments, and the pages of Rolling Stone. Grunge's breakthrough moment—Nirvana's 'Nevermind' displacing Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' from the top of the Billboard 200 in January 1992—was interpreted as a generational overthrow, a signal that the polished artifice of 1980s pop had been rejected in favor of raw, guitar-driven expression.
